Murder Mystery Entertainment in Red Deer & Central Alberta
Red Deer sits in the middle of a very large Central Alberta event market, and Smoking Gun Entertainment has been taking murder mysteries throughout that region for years. Our Red Deer troupe performs interactive comedy mysteries for corporate events, Christmas parties, fundraisers, birthdays and private celebrations, both in the city and well beyond it.
The market is led by Michelle McLernon, an actor, teacher and self-described chaos coordinator who has trained with director Baz Luhrmann and performed at the Commonwealth Games. That combination of performance experience and willingness to embrace chaos is particularly useful when your job involves keeping a fictional homicide entertaining, on schedule and funny.
The troupe’s local venue history shows how varied Central Alberta events can be. Smoking Gun has performed hundreds of shows in venues such as the Heartland Room at Westerner Park for Bruins Plumbing & Heating, at the Holiday Inn in Red Deer, at Sun of a Beach in Sylvan Lake, and at Innisfail Golf Course for two Johns Manville events. Older regional bookings have also taken the cast to the Walking Eagle Motor Inn in Rocky Mountain House, Cottonwood-Gordon Hall in Red Deer County and the Royal Canadian Legion in Innisfail. Each year we are privileged to perform on the Alberta Steam Train for a public show that takes guests from Stettler to Big Valley and back.
Our shows are deliberately more social than traditional dinner theatre. Characters circulate among guests, drop clues and reveal motives while dinner and conversation continue. Once the murder happens, guests can question the suspects and work with their tables to solve the case. The improvised interaction means every performance changes depending on the people in the room, and no guest is required to act.
That flexibility makes the format useful for Central Alberta companies that may be gathering staff from several communities in one place. It also works well for community fundraisers and public events where organizers want entertainment that becomes part of the entire evening.
You provide the venue and meal. Smoking Gun brings the local cast, the mystery, the detective and enough suspicious behaviour to keep everyone guessing.
Where we perform around Red Deer
Our Red Deer troupe performs in the city and throughout nearby Central Alberta communities, including Sylvan Lake, Lacombe, Blackfalds, Penhold and Innisfail. The region is compact enough that many of these bookings can be handled by the same local cast.
We also travel farther to communities such as Olds, Ponoka and Rocky Mountain House. If your event is on an acreage, at a golf course or in a smaller town outside Red Deer, include the exact venue in your inquiry and we will confirm travel and cast availability.

Red Deer murder mystery FAQs
Do you perform outside Red Deer itself?
Yes. Central Alberta is a core part of this troupe’s work, including Sylvan Lake, Innisfail, Lacombe and other nearby communities.
Can a murder mystery work as a fundraiser?
Yes. Community and ticketed events are a good fit because the mystery gives guests a full evening of entertainment and a reason to stay engaged.
What kinds of Red Deer venues work best?
Hotels, golf clubs, banquet rooms, restaurants, community halls and private venues can all work. The key is allowing actors to circulate among guests.
Do guests need costumes?
No, but the actors arrive fully in character. Guest costumes can be fun for most of our themed events but are optional unless the host wants to make them part of the party.
How far will the Red Deer cast travel?
We regularly consider communities throughout Central Alberta. Travel beyond the immediate area depends on date, distance and cast size.
